We use cookies to give you the best experience possible, essay on fahrenheit 451. Fahrenheit — SymbolismSymbolism in Fahrenheit Ray Bradbury, perhaps one of the best-known science fiction, wrote the amazing novel Fahrenheit The novel is about Guy Montag, a fireman who produces fires instead of eliminating them in order to burn books Watt 2, essay on fahrenheit 451. One night while he is walking home from work he meets a young girl who stirs up his thoughts and curiosities like no one has before. She tells him of a world where fireman put out fires instead of starting them and where people read books and think for themselves Allen 1. At a bookhouse, a woman chooses to burn and die with her books and afterwards Montag begins to believe that there is something truly amazing in books, something so amazing that a woman would kill herself for Allen 1.

At this point in the story Guy begins to read and steal books to rebel against society Watt 2. Montag meets a professor named Faber and they conspire together to steal books, essay on fahrenheit 451. Montag soon turns against the authorities and flees their deadly hunting party in a hasty, unpremeditated essay on fahrenheit 451 of homicide, and escapes the country Watt 2. The novel ends as Montag joins a group in the county where each person becomes and narrates a book but for some strange reason refuses to interpret it Slusser Symbolism is involved in many aspects of the story.

In Fahrenheit Ray Bradbury employs various significant essay on fahrenheit 451 through his distinct writing style. First, burning is an important symbol in the novel. In these first two sentences he creates a sense of curiosity and irony because in the story change is something controlled and unwanted by the government and society, so it is very unlikely that anything in Guy Montags society could be changed. What, whether, and how to burn are the issues in the novel Watt 1. It burnt timeSo if he burnt things with the firemen and the sun burnt Time, that meant that everything burnt! Secondly, essay on fahrenheit 451, Fire is a greatly important element of symbolism in Fahrenheit Fire consumes minds, spirits, men, ideas, and books McNelly 3.

Fahrenheit is the temperature at which books burn and is symbolically written on the firemens helmets, tanks, and in the firestation. Fire, Montags reality and world, refines and purifies his mind and also gives unity and depth to the story McNelly 3. Montag interprets his experiences in terms of fire Watt 2, essay on fahrenheit 451. In Montags society the firemans torch has become a flame of reason Slusser Fire is a consequential symbol in the story. Thirdly, the Mechanical Hound is a meaningful symbol. The Mechanical Hound represents the fear of government that the state has instilled upon the people of their futuristic society.

The hound has no emotions and its purpose in being is to make one afraid or to kill someone. The Mechanical Hound is Bradburys chief image of technology Wolfe In addition to fire, burning, and the hound, Essay on fahrenheit 451 hands become another consequential and reoccurring symbol in the novel. Montag reflects his conscience and curiosity through his hands and now his hands reflect his nervousness at his new possible discovery McGiveron Montags hands are expressing his conscience; he does not wish to damage the Bible, but his sub-conscience understands that Fabers help is more important McGiveron 1.

Montags sub-conscience drives his hands into action before his conscious mind has reasoned what is going on McGiveron 2. Here, Bradbury significantly uses the word conscience to show that Montag is still having trouble taking responsibility for his actions McGiveron 2. Again, Montags conscience goes through the act with his hands before his mind has figured out what is going on McGiveron 2. In this essay on fahrenheit 451 each person becomes a book and each narrates his book, but out of some unusual apprehension of the fatal intellect, refuses to interpret it Slusser This quotation means that one day good will come out of thinking, talking, essay on fahrenheit 451, and especially doing McGiveron 3.

Through Bradburys imagery and symbolism of hands he seems to recommend that actions do in fact speak louder than words McGiveron 3. In conclusion, symbolism is a greatly significant element in the novel. A symbol is something that stands for or represents something else. The symbols in the novel add much insight and depth to the storyline. movie evaluation essays

Although this theme may not be obvious at first glance, it is incorporated a little bit. There are multiple Biblical allusions that make themselves known throughout the course of the story. The book describes one time where Montag and his fire crew have to respond to call of an old woman who had a stash of books hidden in her house. The old woman seems to be stubborn and fixated on the idea that books are magical and when you read, books can make you feel as if you are living in the story. In the end, the old woman refuses to leave her books and burns with them. Through the midst of all that chaos, Montag saves on book. The book that he saves is The Bible. As the book progresses, Montag becomes interested with this book and says that he he will reprint the book in a new society, implying that more people can have access to The Bible and so they can see the Word of God.

This new society parallels with what the Bible actually says about the need for the renewal of the world. The final book of the Bible, Revelation, tells about how the Second Coming of Christ will happen, but first there is going to be struggle that has to take place. That struggle, in Fahrenheit , is the corruption of society. Another parallel that can be made between the Bible and Fahrenheit is Montag and the group of men he found after floating down the river and the Twelve Tribes of Israel Sisario , p. The Twelve Tribes of Israel descend from the early biblical figure Abraham.

The tribes dispersed themselves throughout various locations in the Land of Canaan, on both sides of the Jordan River. As time passed, a monarchy that was established caused the splitting of the state, which made it seems as if all the tribes had diminished. However, the prophet Ezekiel proclaimed that land would not be divided anymore and that the tribes would take back their original land. Where are the Ten Lost Tribes? Sisario , p. We must use our minds to halt the endless cycles of destruction by warfare to rebirth to a world of uneasy peace and intellectual death.

The Twelve Tribes of Israel wandering in the desert seeking a new nation can be recalled here as Montag, Granger, and the others wander away from the city with hope that their new world will soon be established. Within the group on men, each of them acts as a different book. Each man memorizes passages from different literature so that they can just reference each other instead of risk getting caught with books. One of the verses that Montag recalls from his book, The Bible, is from the Revelation. It says, It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month.

The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations The Bible, NLT. The fact that this verse mentions on each side of the river ties the comparison together perfectly, considering that, as I mentioned earlier, the Twelve Tribes Of Israel settled on each side of the Jordan River. Just as the Twelve Tribes of Israel are wandering, waiting, and looking for peace to be restored to their land, so are Montag and his group of men who are waiting for peace to be restored regarding societal corruption, especially with literature. Montag desires for his society to be renewed so it is rid of almost all the things it currently stands for, such as the obsession with technology and the fact that no one can think for themself, especially with books.

If Montag could create his own society or alter his current one, the first thing that he would do is provided access to all different types of books and get rid of the corruption that is enforced regarding literature or other arts and nature. Montag also begins to relate his real life and personal situations to different stories and parables in The Bible. The last Biblical comparison regarding Montag has to do the apostle Paul. As he is traveling, he is blinded by a bright light from God. Once he comes to the realization that God is calling him, he changes his name to Saul by the orders of God and begins to preach the Word and tell everyone along his travels about the Lord. This is significant to Fahrenheit because both Paul and Montag make a conversion from non believers to believers.

Montag is also blinded by society in the beginning of book. He transforms from going with the flow of society to realizing that how he was living was no correct and recognizes that something needs to be done and changes need to be made. Both figures, Paul and Montag, also go on to spread the Word. Montag often tells his friends of the parables that he reads about in the Bible and Paul preaches to the people. When Montag met these ladies, he saw that they were both energetic and lively, although, Linda had lost this trait after their marriage while Clarisse had still possessed it.

Bradbury would find it necessary to cast two different ladies as these characters because of how opposite they were in their age, personality and style according to the book. Werner did do Montag justice due to his impressive acting skills and his ability to play the role. Therefore, I can understand how Truffaut had casted these characters and the importance of the roles they play. Some of the positives things occurring in the movie were the effects of the film score and the alternate ending. Film score is original music written to specifically accompany a film. There is a distinct relationship between the mood and setting and the score of the movie.

In the movie, whether it was a dramatic event or an action, such as the scene where the Salamander is racing to its destination, there is a soundtrack of sound effects or music that enhances the dramatic event or action. In the book, Clarisse was not a part of the ending of the book at all, but was rather killed off in the beginning of the book. The alternate ending in the film showed Clarisse meeting up with the book people also and not being killed off at any time. I liked the fact that Truffaut allowed her character to continue onto the ending of the movie.

The cinematic version of Fahrenheit , directed by François Truffaut, and the written novel by Ray Bradbury are dissimilar in plenty of ways. Factors of the movie that Bradbury found enjoyable included the alternate ending, the great score, and Oskar Werner as Montag. Although Bradbury found various flaws in the film, I can conclude that considering the time the film was created and the point of view of the director, the film was an enormous success. Explore how the human body functions as one unit in harmony in order to life. Free Essays - PhDessay. Books, on the opposite, contain the legacy of the whole human race. In cases when people lose their humanity, books can serve as a reminder. Phoenix is another important symbol of the novel. It is connected with fire and the hope for rebirth. Captain Beatty wears the signs of the Phoenix on his hat, which is quite intriguing. This isolation means an intellectual rebirth. The mechanical hound is another peculiar symbol of the novel. What we see today corresponds with the world created by Ray Bradbury. People became addicted to social media, to their devices, to TV.

Everyone is growing tolerance to violence and murder. The dystopian society illustrated in the novel can serve as an eye-opener for the current one. It also can serve as a reminder that life is fast, and happiness is not always easy to attain. In Fahrenheit , there is a profound message and a warning. Ray Bradbury is warning about the influence of media and constant entertainment. Excessive reliance on technology is also an issue. In the world dominated by screens, there will be no place for genuine connections and original thinking.

The book ends with Montag escaping the city to the countryside amid another declaration of war. He joins intellectuals who preserve books and pass it to the next generation. We do not know if the new society will emerge after the war. However, the ending is hopeful. It is true that different types of paper burn at different temperatures. Generally speaking, the ignition temperature of paper is degrees Fahrenheit, or degrees Celsius. It also gets hotter once it burns. The moral of the book is that if society wants to thrive and exist, it needs to develop freedom of speech. It also needs to continue to wrestle with difficult ideas, encouraging human to human interaction. The world, in which people do not feel compassion, cannot survive. The Fahrenheit symbolizes a society, in which technology has a lot of power.

Here, those who can think for themselves are treated as outcasts. Books in the novel represent real life and its quality. Without genuine emotions, knowledge, thinking, people cannot be happy. A society in Fahrenheit is more authoritarian. People are heavily medicated and cannot connect on an emotional basis. Another difference is that in Fahrenheit , digital addiction is far more extreme. Even though we do have social media addiction, people are still able to think freely. This paper was written and submitted to our database by a student to assist your with your own studies. Panning outward, Hugo shows that bigotry takes a great toll on characters such as Javert and M. The community tries to hamper the bishop with gendarmes, even though the bishop has nothing on his person that Cravatte might want to steal. By leaving his door unlocked les miserables essay night, the bishop shows that he is open to any visitor who might come by, whereas the townspeople who lock their doors are shutting out all wanderers and committing themselves to a myopic, small-minded existence.

By welcoming Valjean into his home, the bishop has the transformative experiences of healing a damaged soul and making a friend, whereas the townspeople persist in their ignorant hatred and fail to learn that a yellow passport is not always a sign of evil. Before his redemption, Jean Valjean allows his prejudice against the upper classes to color his attitude toward the kindly bishop of Digne, whom he conflates with all of the other wealthy oppressors in his life and thus robs in a moment of weakness and self-loathing. Even if the bishop had been attacked by Cravatte, even if thieves had crept into his unlocked home at night, the bishop implies that he would remain calm and content because of his choice not to live in a state of hatred and suspicion.

the metamorphosis essay

He is originally sentenced to prison for stealing a loaf of bread - this is the only way he can be a provider to his sister's children. What is Hugo's perspective on justice? How is it similar to and different from the legal definition of justice? Are there characters that embody these differing ideas of what justice means? Hugo emphasizes a justice that is dependent on mercy. His protagonist is an ex-convict who goes on to commit identity fraud after his imprisonment ends. Another novelist with a different idea of justice might have made a villain out of Jean Valjean, but for Hugo, Valjean's journey toward compassion and righteousness is a hero's journey. Valjean does have respect for laws, but he also sees how they fail - particularly among the poor.

Javert embodies a different idea of justice. Javert is rigid in his adherence to the law, and when he is confronted with a situation that cannot be neatly resolved within the existing justice system, he kills himself. Les Misérables is well known for its large cast of characters. Who is your favorite character, and why? How does Hugo develop this character's personality in the narrative? Enjolras is my favorite character. When he is introduced along with the rest of the ABC Society, he is described as the leader, but the reasons for this are not fully clear until the last stand on the barricade. Enjolras is simultaneously a compassionate idealist and fierce zealot, and these qualities are vividly illustrated in the way that he treats one of his men who murders an innocent civilian.

With a grand speech explaining that the revolution must bring in a world of new and fairer values, he executes this man. But Enjolras does not rejoice in death. At another point, he shoots an officer in the French army and weeps that he must kill his brother. Enjolras' reactions to these complicated situations reveal a complex character. Though Les Misérables is strongly informed by its historical context, it also contains timeless themes. What is one incident, character, or idea that remains particularly pertinent today? One idea that remains relevant today is that of the good man who becomes a victim of an unjust legal system.

Especially in light of high levels of incarceration and police violence, it is not always clear that every judicial decision is actually just, or that the justice system actually creates justice. In some cases, poor people seem to be penalized unfairly. In the book, Jean Valjean was originally imprisoned for stealing a tiny bit of food to feed his sister's children, and he faced enormous barriers to rejoining society after his release. We can imagine Jean Valjeans in our own society, and ask what happens to prisoners after they are released, and what forces push them into recidivism i. committing more crimes. Do you think Javert is justified in going to such lengths to pursue Jean Valjean?

Why or why not? I think he is justified in pursuing Valjean. The reader knows what a moral and righteous character Valjean is, but Javert does not have the same perspective; all he knows is that an ex-convict has gained a position of great social power in Montfermeil. Valjean is remarkable for his incredible strength and his high intelligence, two characteristics that would make a particularly dangerous criminal, if Valjean decided to pursue that life. Les Misérables contains many cases of people discovering someone's hidden identity. Describe one such episode, and explain its significance in the narrative. I was abused by my father and,…. The move toward an industrial culture had moved many people from the pastoral scenes of the country into the grungy hearts of the cities. Many of the people worked in the factories six days a week for many hours a day, or they worked in mines and other industries to support the industry in the cities.

The response from the artistic community was to remind the public of two things. They wanted people to remember where they came from and they wanted to help people see the true emotion of life. However, when one looks at the history of any philosophical subject, it is important to note that differing concepts of philosophy often arise "out of" that very historical and cultural fabric of the time -- and then evolve so that they become more acceptable to future generations rather than contemporaneous ones. Individuals tend to justify unethical behavior based on these concepts; if the behavior results in what they perceive to be the best choice for everyone, or if they have self-interests and are able to find a reason for their action. A classic example is in the Victor Hugo book Les Miserables. The main character is imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving sister and seven children. He is imprisoned for 19 years for…. The use of a retractable plateau allows for the creation of new places in the woods, and also makes the woods seem like an ever-shifting place, where identity is continually disturbed and questioned.

The impression is as if the viewer shifts suddenly from a community center theater production for children to the darkness of Les Miserables, another famous musical with a moving set. The woods are not entirely a place of freedom, however. Set designer Aaron Kennedy makes use of multiple layers within the context of the scenery to convey different 'realms. Until Rapunzel is cast out from the tower, she can only interact with others in a limited fashion, through her singing and letting down her glowing, golden hair. A lighted knothole represents the spirit of Cinderella's mother, who…. Because of Craig, set designers are revered as artists and equal partners with directors, actors, and authors. ithout Craig, classes in set design would not have the prestige they do today.

No director would dare to embark upon a 'black box' production of Shakespeare or opera. Because of Craig, even those directors and designers who still see the value of realism strive to create impressions in the hearts of the audience, rather than literal representations of a drawing-room reality. orks Cited Duncan, Isadora. html Pepiton, Charles. The film, Les Misérables took the world by storm when it premiered with an incredible cast, moving music, and astounding attention to detail. Turning a 1,page book into a two-hour film is no easy task and requires the use of heavy symbolism to deliver a clear, strong impact on the viewer. To place emphasis on his sadness and loneliness, the film places this event directly after the wedding of Marius and Cosette, as opposed to the text which places his death some time after the wedding.

Although this may be seen as a strategy to cut down time and get rid of clutter within the movie, the choice also serves as a method of further cementing the theme of redemption and impacting its audience in a greater fashion. This is the same church that Valjean entered at the beginning of the movie and shows how his journey has finally ended at the same place it commenced so many years before. The scene also happens at a different time within the Les Misérables timeline. The movie places the event directly after the wedding of Cosette and Marius, while the text places it sometime after.

what happiness! Cosette, your father more than ever…We are going to bring him back, take him with us, whether he will or no. This decision to move up his death in the movie emphasises the reason why Valjean died and connects his death more directly to finally losing Cosette and finishing his final mission. These decisions in the movie help to best show the message of redemption in an impactful way and keep the audience captivated throughout the movie, while staying true to the themes in the book. In both the film and the text, there is a reference to the bishop, but the movie magnifies this brief appearance into a scene revolving between bringing these two characters together. The appearance of Fantine consoling a lone, dying Valjean shows how Valjean has finally learned to love and how he has redeemed himself through his love for Cosette.

The presence of Fantine also symbolizes the end of his journey, and how he has finally accomplished what God planned for him. Later, when the Bishop appears out of another door, the topic of redemption is driven in once more. The Bishop brings the audience back to the beginning of the movie, when Valjean first appeared as a convict. Finally, the use of music throughout the scene acts as a very powerful reminder of this same theme. The music begins immediatley upon the comencment of the scene and continues until the credits begin to roll. This choice of beginning the scene in near silence, as well as the dark, lone lyrics aid in highlighting the loneliness Valjean feels, and the pain these last moments bring him.

These words also set up the rest of the song for the audience and show that Valjean thinks that his daughter no longer cares about him, but has replaced him with Marius. The songwriter is trying to convey a feeling of humbleness, and show that even in death Valjean cares more about the wellbeing of Cosette than his own. The increase in volume and instrumentation also demonstrates that this is a very important moment in the song, and that Valjean is finally accepting his redemption and his completion. She is telling Valjean that he is finally redemmed, and that he is now, after many trials and tribulations, finally worthy of being with God. Fantine also shows gratitude toward him for raising her child well and for loving her.

Essay on what is education

Essay on what is education

We expect that they will look beneath the surface, try to challenge misrepresentation and lies, and be open to alternatives. In this case MBAs, educated in the tools of leveraged buyouts, essay on what is education, tax breaks, and capital mobility have done what no invading army could do: they destroyed an American city with total impunity on behalf of something called the "bottom line. Smith, H. London: Thorsons. But essentially your job is to shape that material into a final product that will fit essay on what is education scheme you had in mind to begin with. And knowledge is not an education in itself.

Purpose Of Education

One of the articles in The Learning Revolution IC 27 Originally published in Winter on page 52 Copyright cby Context Institute. We are accustomed to thinking of learning as good in and of itself, essay on what is education. But as environmental educator David Orr reminds us, our education up till now has in some ways created a monster. This essay is adapted from his commencement address to the graduating class of at Arkansas College. It prompted many in our office to wonder why such speeches are made at the end, rather than the beginning, of the collegiate experience. David Orr is the founder of the Meadowcreek Project, an environmental education center in Fox, AR, and is currently on the faculty of Oberlin College in Ohio.

VIII, essay on what is education, No. If today is a typical day on planet Earth, we will lose square miles of rainforest, or about an acre a second. We will lose another 72 square miles to encroaching deserts, as a result of human mismanagement and overpopulation. We will lose 40 to species, and no one knows whether the number is 40 or Today the human population will increase byAnd today we will add 2, tons of chlorofluorocarbons to the atmosphere and 15 million tons of carbon. Tonight the Earth will be a little hotter, its waters more acidic, and the fabric of life more threadbare. The truth is that many things on which your future health and prosperity depend are in dire jeopardy: climate stability, the resilience and productivity of natural systems, the beauty of the natural world, and biological diversity.

It is worth noting that this is not the work of ignorant people. It is, rather, largely the result of work by people with BAs, BSs, LLBs, MBAs, and PhDs. Elie Wiesel made a similar point to the Global Forum in Moscow last winter when he said that the designers and perpetrators of the Holocaust essay on what is education the heirs of Kant and Goethe. In most respects the Germans were the best educated people on Earth, but their education did not serve as an adequate barrier to barbarity. What was wrong with their education? The same could be said of the way our education has prepared us to think about the natural world. It is a matter of no small consequence that the only people who have lived sustainably on the planet for any length of time could not read, or, like the Amish, do not make a fetish of reading.

My point is simply that education is no guarantee of decency, prudence, or wisdom. More of the same kind of education will only compound our problems. This is not an argument for ignorance, but rather a statement that the worth of education must now be measured against the standards of decency and human survival — the issues now looming so large before us in the decade of the s and beyond. It is not education that will save us, but education of a certain kind, essay on what is education. What went wrong with contemporary culture and with education?

Together these three laid the foundations for modern education, foundations now enshrined in myths we have come to accept without question. Let me suggest six. First, there is the myth that ignorance is a solvable problem. Ignorance is not a solvable problem, but rather an inescapable part of the human condition. The advance of knowledge always carries with it the advance of some form of ignorance. Inafter Thomas Midgely Jr. discovered CFCs, what had previously been a piece of trivial ignorance became a critical, life-threatening gap in the human understanding of the biosphere. No one thought to ask "what does this substance do to what? With the discovery of CFCs knowledge increased; but like the circumference of an expanding circle, ignorance grew as well.

A second myth is that with enough knowledge and technology we can manage planet Earth. It appeals to our fascination with digital readouts, computers, buttons and dials. But the complexity of Earth and its life systems can never be safely managed. The ecology of the top inch of topsoil is still largely unknown, as is its relationship to the larger systems of the biosphere, essay on what is education. What might be managed is us : human desires, economies, politics, and communities. But our attention is caught by those things that avoid the hard choices implied by politics, morality, ethics, and common sense. It makes far better sense to reshape ourselves to fit a finite planet than to attempt to reshape the planet to fit our infinite wants.

A third myth is that knowledge is increasing and by implication human goodness. There is an information explosion going on, by which I mean a rapid increase of data, words, and paper. But this explosion should not be taken for an increase in knowledge and wisdom, which cannot so easily by measured. What can be said truthfully is that some knowledge is increasing while other kinds of knowledge are being lost. David Ehrenfeld has pointed out that biology departments no longer hire faculty in such areas as systematics, essay on what is education, taxonomy, or ornithology. In other words, important knowledge is being lost because of the recent overemphasis on molecular biology and genetic engineering, which are more lucrative, but not more important, areas of inquiry.

We still lack the the science of land health that Aldo Leopold called for half a century ago. In the words of Essay on what is education Lopez:. Year by year the number of people with firsthand experience in the land dwindles. Rural populations continue to shift to the cities…. In the wake of this loss of personal and local knowledge, the knowledge from which a real geography is derived, the knowledge on which a country must ultimately stand, has come something hard to define but I think sinister and unsettling. In the confusion of data with knowledge is a deeper mistake that learning will make us better people. But learning, as Loren Eiseley once said, is endless and "In itself it will never make us ethical [people]. All things considered, it is possible that we are becoming more ignorant of the things we must know to live well and sustainably on the Earth.

A fourth myth of higher education is that we can adequately restore that which we have dismantled. In the modern curriculum we have fragmented the world into bits and pieces called disciplines and subdisciplines, essay on what is education. As a result, after 12 or 16 or 20 years of education, essay on what is education, most students graduate without any broad integrated sense of the unity of things. The consequences for essay on what is education personhood and for the planet are large. For example, we routinely produce economists who lack the most rudimentary knowledge of ecology. This explains why our national accounting systems do not subtract the costs of biotic impoverishment, soil erosion, poisons in the air or water, and resource depletion from gross national product.

We add the price of the sale of a bushel of wheat to GNP while forgetting to subtract the three bushels of topsoil lost in its production. Fifth, there is a myth that the purpose of education is that of giving you the means for upward mobility and success. Thomas Merton once identified this as the "mass production of people literally unfit for anything except to take part in an elaborate and completely artificial charade. The plain fact is that the planet does not need more "successful" people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, essay on what is education lovers of every shape and form. It needs people who live well in their places.

It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these needs have little to do with success as our culture has defined it. Finally, there is a myth that our culture represents the pinnacle of human achievement : we alone are modern, technological, and developed. This, of course, represents cultural arrogance of the worst sort, and a gross misreading of history and anthropology. Recently this view has taken the form that we won the cold war and that the triumph of capitalism over communism is complete, essay on what is education.

Communism failed because it produced too little essay on what is education too high a cost. But capitalism has also failed because it produces too much, shares too little, also at too high a cost to our children and grandchildren. Communism failed as an ascetic morality, essay on what is education. Capitalism failed because it destroys morality altogether. This is not the happy world that any number of feckless advertisers and politicians describe. We have built a world of sybaritic wealth for a few and Calcuttan poverty for a growing underclass. At its worst it is a world of crack on the streets, insensate violence, anomie, and the most desperate kind of poverty.

The fact is that we live in a disintegrating culture. In the words of Ron Miller, editor of Holistic Review :. It does not cultivate vision, essay on what is education, imagination, or aesthetic or spiritual sensitivity. It does not encourage gentleness, generosity, caring, or compassion. Increasingly in the late 20th Century, the economic-technocratic-statist worldview has become a monstrous destroyer of what is loving and life-affirming in the human soul. Measured against the agenda of human survival, how might we rethink education? Let essay on what is education suggest six principles. First, all education is environmental education. By what is included or excluded we teach students that they are part of or apart from the natural world.

To teach economics, for example, without reference to the laws of thermodynamics or those of ecology is to teach a fundamentally important ecological lesson: that physics and ecology have nothing to do with the economy. That just happens to be essay on what is education wrong. The same is true throughout all of the curriculum. A second principle comes from the Greek concept of paideia. Subject matter is simply the tool. The Greeks knew better. Third, I would like to propose that knowledge carries with it the responsibility to see that it is well used in the world. The results of a great deal of contemporary research bear resemblance to those foreshadowed by Mary Shelley: monsters of technology and its byproducts for which no one takes responsibility or is even expected to take responsibility.

Evaluation of Two Theories of Attribution One attribution theory is the correspondent inference theory by Jones and Davis This is because it is easier to say that the cause of someone behaviour is something within the actor as it makes the world seem more stable and predictable, rather than having to make an attribution for a person for every situation this would make. make sense of their judgments. The Attribution Theory is one element to this understanding. It helps give reasoning or cause for an action by assigning explanations to events.

In other words, it allows an individual to give a reason for the result of an action. Psychological research into attribution began with the work of Fritz Heider in the early part of the 20th century, subsequently developed by others such as Harold Kelley and Bernard Weiner. Attribution theory is concerned with how individuals. Theories of Causal Attribution in Social Cognition In social cognition causal attribution is one the most important models. In causal attribution we attempt to find cause-effect relationships between human behavior and possible causes which made it happen. Kelley's model of covariation is an attribution theory and it makes suggestions to enlighten how and why people behave in a certain way. Furthermore, a cause of the FAE fundamental attribution error could potentially be the fact that the observer may not see much to gain in making the effort to analyse the situational causes of a certain behaviour and too cognitively demanding Andrews, However, due to the fact that they have greater incentives to predict and influence behaviour, people who tend to depend on others are less likely to make erroneous attributions, which explains why people from more interdependent cultures such as East Asians tend to avoid the FAE Choi et al, in contrast with people from more independent cultures such as Europeans or Americans.

To further elaborate on this point, numerous psychologists believe that culture may have a determining effect on whether the observer is prone to excessively relying on dispositional judgements. They were then asked to judge a forced writer a writer which wrote a piece as a forced task, whether or not what they were writing reflected their own beliefs. Kitayama and Miyamoto carries out a similar study, including Japanese and American students and as predicted, the Americans displayed correspondence bias, while the Japanese students did not. Moreover, with the aim of discovering whether the dispositional rebound occurs amongst people of East Asian background and using the dispositional rebound as a tool to study the process of attribution, a study was carried out which participants consisting of students from Hogeschool Gent, Belgium and students from Kasestart University in Bangkok, Thailand, were given the task of judging a free or forced writer in the attitude attribution paradigm.

The diagnosticity of the essays were manipulated in order to have participants also judge the essays based on whether they were diagnostic or not. Thai students were more sensitive to the manipulation of the diagnosticity of the essays, whilst the Belgian participants showed no sensitivity at all. Both ethnic groups displayed symptoms of the dispositional rebound when judging a diagnostic forced essay, however, Belgian participants were the only ones to display the dispositional rebound when judging a non-diagnostic essay. Subsequently, participants were asked to judge a series of pictorially represented behaviours. Both Belgian and Thai participants displayed the dispositional rebound when the situational information was hidden. A further explanation of the dispositional rebound could be that it is the ironic consequence of suppression and correction of an initial dispositional judgment as a result of cognitive fatigue due to the fact that the judgment of a constrained target demands a larger amount of cognitive effort which due to the reduction of cognitive resources, leaves some observers to rely on less demanding abstract language.

The results showed that regardless of culture, all participants displayed correspondence bias. These findings may suggest that culture may not determine whether an observer is prone to erroneous attributions. In conclusion, it seems that the most erroneous method in our ways of making social judgments is our tendency to rely excessively on dispositional information when doing so and ironically suppressing our dispositional inferences which instinct seems to enforce the occurrence of, seems to cause a rebound effect in subsequent social judgments. But, it also seems that being raised in a society where it is the norm to be dependent on one another, tends to make one naturally more sensitive to informational information when it is there to be sensed and therefore more able to make accurate inferences about behaviour and mental states.

Attribution Theory and Emotional Intelligence Attribution theory Attribution theory is a theory that focuses on creating an understanding of the ways in which people interpret events and the relationship of the events to their thinking and behaviors. The theory was proposed by Heider , Weiner and , and Weiner Attribution theory takes into assuption that individuals try to understand why people behave the way they do attribute causes of events to behaviors.

It also creates an understanding of behavior of individuals using three-stage processes that are considered to build the strength of the attribution. Among the processes include the fact that an individual should perceive or see their behavior, individuals should believe that their behaviors were due their intentional circumstances. Finally, individuals should determine whether they believe somebody else forced them to perform or engage in that behavior. The relationship between these factors creates a web of causation…. The work of any lady…can indeed arouse a degree of pity in the eyes of some experts. A few of Reichardt's early songs were included in a collection of her father's lieder, 'Duetsche Lieder' and three of Hensel's early songs "appear in each of Felix's Opus 8 and Opus 9; the 'Allegemeine musikalische Zeitung' claimed that 'An des lust'gen runnenes Rand' a duet composed by Fanny, is the best song in the collection" of Opus 8. Support for the Tannen model only was found after additional research was done, and a new questionnaire was given that scored recipient's self-perception in terms of feminine and masculine characteristics and inculcation into traditional gender roles. Individuals with strong gender self-images were more likely to fall in line with the Tannen model of women perceiving nurturance and males perceiving conflict in relatively neutral scenarios and seeing men in general as less cooperative.

This study is provocative on several levels, not the least of which in its stress upon the individualized nature of gender norms and the lack of inherent biological tendencies towards perceiving nurturance and conflict. It suggests the need to more carefully screen subjects in terms of individualized…. Research Library. In my own experiences as a first-year student, I came in conflict with an RA because of his or her strong institutional power orientation. As a freshman at Boston College I was marked as in violation for a relatively minor infraction by my RA. I doubt that I would have been reprimanded -- however, when the RA questioned me, I was relatively casual.

I did not act worried and abjectly sorry about his power to affect my future, and in retrospect, I realized that the student's sense of authority had been threatened by what he perceived as my insolence. I saw him as a fellow student, the RA saw me as a threat to his power because I treated him as an equal, not a superior. In any situation where authority is unclear, clashes of McClelland personality types will always be an issue. Individuals with a strong power orientation will…. Experts provided extended series of examples, mostly from the 20th century, demonstrating how leadership characteristics change over time and vary with context.

Therefore future, 21st-century leaders should learn from the confused, sometimes contradictory and still evolving historical development of the concept "leadership," in order to distill the useful concepts from mistakes and temporary analytical fads. What seems to persist from the development of leadership theory over the last three centuries, is that leaders can be made rather than born regardless of inherited socio-economic status, and that while certain traits may be more prominent or apparent in those who find themselves in positions of leadership…. In this way, the article is constructed in a logical way in order to arrive at its more complex presentations and finally at its conclusions. Interestingly, the concepts are explained in very clear language, without an overflow of academic jargon, even while at the same time explicating academic concepts upon the basis of philosophy and neuroscientific research. Because the article is explicatory in nature, the author does not conduct practical research to establish a hypothesis and prove it, but rather engages in citing research already conducted in order to prove his hypothesis on perception and causation. In this way, the article is generally philosophical in nature, although it makes significant use of practical and scientific data established by others.

In this way, it satisfies both the requirements of philosophy and science, while addressing a primarily philosophical idea. We had so many things in common, such as the same favorite television shows and the same favorite sports. Our proximity to one another also aided in the development of this attraction toward one another. We all lived on the same block and therefore had more opportunities to interact with one another outside of the school setting.

Although physical attractiveness did not necessarily influence our friendship, according to Myers , it is usually the first step in any sort of relationship, even those that are platonic in nature. Although caregivers give their undivided attention to children, there is always a chance that a child might be exposed to danger. This danger can be in any form, such as a fire in the house, falling and injuring one's self or child abuse.

Child abuse may be the unsuitable actions of an adult towards a child that leads the child to develop distorted perceptions of life. These actions by adults may cause a child to grow up and do the same thing to other children or it may simply result in a child lacking trust in people no matter how kind they are or even over trusting people, hoping to let out the emotions held back. Helplessness and Depression The concept of learned helplessness is most strongly identified with psychologist Martin Seligman. The concept of learned helplessness describes the phenomenon that occurs when an animal or person observes or experiences traumatic events that they can exert little influence or control over. When the animal or person discovers that it can do nothing to escape or affect such an event it may acquire learned helplessness and not attempt to even try to remove itself from potentially harmful situations.

In behavioral terms the organism learns that reinforcement and behavior are not contingent on one another Seligman, The organism essentially becomes conditioned to form a belief that nothing it can do can affect the situation and it simply "gives up. One aspect in this regard that strands out in many studies is that while first- time perceptions can be erroneous and might be based on false preconceptions and stereotypes, yet these first impression can be extremely strong and also tend to influence later assessments of the person.

This relates to the previously mentioned finding that first impressions tend often to focus on abnormal or different attributes, rather than on conventional or more positive attributes.
